2016 League Success

2016 League Success
I would imagine that many English footballers are haunted by the albatross that is 1966. That the biggest date in the English game's history is receding comfortably into history, even antiquity, has become something of a millstone. And Spencer has a similar date in terms of the heroics of 1994 when two league titles were secured that season.

Yesterday saw Spencer create our own history. Continuing on from the previous Saturday, which appeared rather hard to follow, we achieved exactly that. If Smithy's 2s and Cameron and Aqib's 3s took both the plaudits and their own league titles, yesterday saw Jon S's 1s and Hussain's 4s step eagerly into the limelight.

With forecast rain adding spice and confusion, all sorts of permutations were possible on the day. The 1s needed to win and hope that Walton and Malden tripped up or that we banked enough bonus points before the deluge. For Hussain, the equation was simpler - win or bust against league leaders Dulwich.

The day saw all sorts of twists and turns. But as the rain closed in to end proceedings across the entire county, Spencer emerged triumphantly. An excellent end to the season for the 1s with wins from the last two league games, along with losses to our key rivals, meant we ended up comfortably safe. Magnificent work fellas.

And a massive well done to Hussain and his colleagues. The rain ended their game prematurely but in truth they were beating Dulwich. This is the first time the 4s have won the Prem in our history and reflects the work and efforts Mr Jafri has put in over the years.

So a massive hats off to the guys who have made their own history. It's going to take some kind of effort to top this in 2017 but that's the challenge I hope the club sets itself.

- Neil Harrison (Chairman)
